A Clucking Good Song: “Do Right” by Jimmie’s Chicken Shack

Continuing along the same lines as my blog post about Travis, here’s another lesser-known but terrific song (also coincidentally from 1999) that I think is worthy of a mention: “Do Right” by Jimmie’s Chicken Shack.

I happened to catch this one, very fleetingly (as it appeared for one, maybe two weeks at most), on MTV’s TRL back in the day (I voted for it, but to no avail). I’m not sure that I ever heard it on the radio following that (I think I might have even requested it, without success), or caught any public mention of it again (I had to go directly to their website any time I wanted to listen to it) – but I thought it was a blast anyway.

I then figured out how to play it on the guitar and kept it in my personal repertoire for many years, as it’s just as fun to play as it is to listen to, and it afforded some opportunity for showmanship (especially the part after the chorus – good luck getting that lead melody out of your head, by the way).

So here’s to “Do Right”, a more obscure song that never got enough love, by a band that loves chicken puns.
